August Apple Cup: Pullman Gets the Rivalry in Prime Palouse Heat

August Apple Cup. Say it a few times. It'll grow on you, or it won't, but it's happening. The 2027 Apple Cup is moving to Aug. 28 in Pullman. That's the first time in 118 years this rivalry gets played in August. Prime Palouse heat. The move pushes the game up from its traditional mid-September slot. WSU and UW agreed to it, and the press release landed Monday. The Cougs get a bye week out of it in Week 4 of the season, which is a nice little scheduling cushion. The 2027 game is the fourth of a five-year extension the sides hammered out in 2023, back when the Pac-12 was still smoldering. The 2028 game in Seattle is the last one under contract. After that? Who knows. The Huskies have the all-time edge, 78-34-6, and they took this year's game 24-10 in Seattle. That stings. But an August kickoff in Pullman changes the whole feel. It's hot, it's harvest season, and the Palouse is doing what it does best. If you're making the trip, pack sunscreen and a cooler. Cougs get their tip times for Pac-12 women's hoops slate

Tip times are out. That means we can finally start planning our February weekends around the Beasley Coliseum instead of pretending we'll get anything done on a Saturday afternoon. The Pac-12 women's hoops slate is here, and the Cougs have actual times to circle. No more guessing. No more refreshing the conference site like it's a job. We know when to show up. The schedule itself is what it is. Conference play is always a grind, and the Pac-12 is not going to hand anyone an easy path. But there's something about having the tip times locked in that makes it real. You can look at a Tuesday night in January and know exactly where you'll be. That's the stuff. That's the rhythm of a season. And sure, we've been through a lot lately. The Beavers and Cougs made their rivalry official, which still feels like the right kind of weird. There's also been plenty of talk about the new Pac-12 and who's rising while others slide. That's all fair. But for now, this is about the women's team and the road ahead. They've got a slate. We've got a calendar. The rest will sort itself out on the court. So mark the dates. Set the reminders. Grab the crew. Cougar basketball is coming back, and we know exactly when to be there. Go Cougs.

TV tip times locked in for Pac-12 men's hoops slate

TV tip times are locked in for Pac-12 men's hoops, and that means you can finally plan your winter Saturdays around something other than shoveling the walk. The conference released the full broadcast schedule, so now we know exactly when the Cougs will tip off against the league. No more guessing. No more refreshing your phone at the bar. You can set your DVR or, if you're old school, write it on the calendar magnet you still have from that Pullman insurance agency. Look, the Pac-12 isn't what it used to be. We know. But this is still the league we grew up on, and these are still the games that matter when you're checking scores from a coffee shop in Seattle or a living room in Spokane. The Cougs will get their share of windows. Some early. Some late. All of them worth staying up for, even if you have to explain to your coworkers why you're dragging on Monday. If you're hungry for more than tip times, we've got you. Read "Pinnick, Pulalasi, Leaupepetele: Three Cougs, One Postgame Story" for a look at what happens after the final buzzer. It's the kind of thing you won't find anywhere else. So mark the dates. Get your snacks ready. And remember, when the ball goes up, we're all still in Pullman, even if the wheat fields are a thousand miles away. Go Cougs.

Bohler's Back in Business: Pac-12 Volleyball Slate Drops for the Cougs

Bohler's Back in Business: Pac-12 Volleyball Slate Drops for the Cougs

The Pac-12 volleyball schedule is out, and Bohler Gym is about to get loud again. That's not a prediction, that's a promise. The Cougs have their slate for the new-look conference, and it's got that familiar feel, home matches in front of a crowd that actually shows up, road trips that make Pullman feel like a distant memory, and a chance to prove this program belongs in the conversation. You don't need us to tell you that volleyball in Bohler hits different. The floor squeaks, the students pack in, and the band is loud enough to rattle the rafters. It's the best non-football ticket in town, and it's not particularly close. The schedule drop is the first real sign that the new Pac-12 era has legs. We've already touched on what the conference shuffle means with the Fresno State opener, and this slate just reinforces it. There's a rhythm to it now, a real calendar to point at and plan around. Some of these opponents are familiar, some are new, but the goal doesn't change. You win at home, you steal a couple on the road, and you put yourself in position for something bigger come November. We're not going to pretend we know exactly how the standings will shake out. That's for the players to decide. But we know this much: when the Cougs run out onto that floor, the place will be full, and the noise will be real. That's the standard. Go Cougs.

Rowing crew sets its fall schedule, and you know where to find them

Rowing crew sets its fall schedule, and you know where to find them

The rowing team dropped its fall schedule, and if you know Pullman, you know where to find them. The Snake's Mouth. The water is cold, the mornings are early, and the coxswains are loud enough to wake the Palouse. That's the point. Fall rowing is about getting the new oarsmen and women into the rhythm before the real work starts in the spring. It is not glamorous. It is grit, and that is exactly how Cougs row. This is not the part of the athletic calendar that makes the highlights. No one is stuffing a stadium. But the crew team is out there grinding before most of us have finished our first cup of coffee. That matters. Pullman is a town that respects the work, and this team does the work. If you want to stay close to the action on campus this fall, you should also check out "Bohler's Back in Business: Pac-12 Volleyball Slate Drops for the Cougs." Different sport. Same commitment to showing up. The volleyball schedule is out, the rowing schedule is set, and both teams are getting after it. Find the rowers on the water. Find the volleyball team in Bohler. Find a reason to be proud. Go Cougs.

WSU and Gonzaga close league play with a Wednesday night showdown

The Cougs and the Zags will close out the new Pac-12 women's basketball regular season against each other on March 6, and it will be in Spokane at McCarthey Athletic Center. That's a Wednesday night showdown with some history behind it. The full conference schedule dropped Friday, and it's a clean 16-game slate for the eight-team league. Every team plays everyone home and away. Washington State opens league play at home against Texas State on Jan. 9. Gonzaga starts earlier, hosting Oregon State on Jan. 6. Times and TV are still TBD, which is the standard dance this time of year. The head-to-head numbers are what they are. Gonzaga leads the all-time series 14-7, and they swept all four meetings when these two shared the West Coast Conference the last two seasons. That stings. But this is a new league and a new chapter. The Cougs get one more shot at the Zags to close things out, and there's something fitting about that. For more on what's happening around the program, check out the update on Trey Leckner healing up fast and maybe finally seeing the field. Tight end room could use the help. Go Cougs.
