John Olerud Gets His Bronze Moment in Pullman This October
John Olerud spent a career making the hardest thing in sports look routine. Now Pullman gets to make sure that never gets forgotten. The man who wore the Cougar uniform before he wore out big-league pitching gets his bronze moment on the Palouse this October, and it is exactly the kind of honor that should hit different for those of us who remember watching him in Bohler or listening to the radio when the name first started popping up in draft chatter.
Olerud was not loud. He just hit. He just won. Two World Series rings, a batting title, and a swing so smooth it looked like he was playing catch with himself. But before Seattle and Toronto and Boston knew his name, he was a two-way Cougar who made Pullman proud. A statue is permanent. That is the point. This is not a jersey retirement that fades into a ceremony program. This is a spot on campus where future Cougs will walk past and ask who that was, and somebody will get to tell them.
The timing works, too. While the football team sorts out its quarterback situation ahead of the Utah State trip, and Kirby Moore gambles on his own offense, October gives Pullman a reason to pause and remember a different kind of excellence. One that did not need a debate. John Olerud gets his bronze moment, and we get to stand there and say we saw him first. Go Cougs.
