Maxine Murphy trades the racquet for a clipboard, joins Cougar Tennis staff

Maxine Murphy is swapping the racquet for a clipboard, and that says something about the kind of program Jaymie Nelson is building. Murphy joins the Cougar Tennis staff as an assistant coach, coming off a solid playing career at UCLA. She knows the Pac-12, she knows the level, and now she gets to help pass that on. We like this hire. It feels intentional. Murphy played at a high clip, and bringing in someone who just finished competing means she gets what today's players are going through. That matters in Pullman, where you're not just coaching the forehand, you're helping someone adjust to a town that doesn't have a Nordstrom. If you missed it, the Cougs kicked off fall right at home in the "Cougar Classic." That tournament gave the team a chance to settle in before conference gets real. Murphy stepping in now means she'll have a full fall to build relationships and figure out who does what in doubles. That's the kind of head start you want. We don't need to oversell this. Murphy is a good addition. She knows the league, she knows the work, and she chose to come here. That's enough. Go Cougs.

Cougar Tennis kicks off fall right at home, hosting the Cougar Classic

Tennis is back on the Palouse, and the Cougar Classic is the first serve of fall. Cougar Tennis is kicking things off right at home, hosting the whole thing in Pullman. That means no bus rides, no airport coffee, no sleeping in a hotel bed that isn't yours. Just tennis on familiar courts, with familiar faces in the stands. That's a good start to any season. The fall schedule is always a little different, shorter matches, more rotations, a chance to figure out who pairs well in doubles and who steps up when the pressure isn't quite conference play yet. But hosting gives this team something real. They get to settle in, play their game, and let everyone else adjust to the altitude and the wind. That's an edge, even in September. We've been covering the Cougar Classic across the board. If you want to see how the cross country team handled their own home meet, check out "XC Takes Both Titles at Home, Cougar Classic Belongs to Pullman." Same name, different sport, same result, Pullman holding its own. For now, the tennis courts are the story. First day is in the books. The home team is just getting started. Go Cougs.
