Four Cougs closed out the Cougar Classic with singles wins on home courts, and that matters more than the bracket says. It is nice to see the tennis team finish a tournament on its own terms in Pullman, especially after the football and soccer programs spent last week grinding through tough travel. The football team faced a tough test on the road for Cougs at Cal State Fullerton, and the soccer team had to grind out a 1-1 draw on the road at Fullerton. Those are the kinds of trips that wear a program down. So watching four Cougs step up in front of a home crowd and close out matches is a reminder that this campus still produces results when the pressure is on.

The takeaway here is not that tennis is suddenly the flagship sport. It is that Washington State teams, across the board, are finding ways to finish. The soccer team fought for a draw on the road. The football team prepped for Duquesne with Kirby Moore on Duquesne prep and what it means to be a Coug. And now the tennis team put four singles wins on the board at home. That is a pattern. It is not flashy, and it will not make SportsCenter, but it is the kind of consistency that builds a program that does not fold in the third set.

What we like about this is the location. Home courts in Pullman are not a given advantage. The wind, the travel for opponents, the quiet gyms, none of it is glamorous. But the Cougs used it. Four singles wins means depth, and depth is what keeps a program from collapsing when the top player has an off day. That is the kind of thing you notice if you have spent any time watching Cougar sports over the years. It is easy to get excited about one star. It is harder to build a roster where the fourth singles player can close out a match.

The open question is whether this carries into the spring season. A home tournament win in the fall is a good sign, but it is not a trophy. The real test will come when these same players hit the road and face a team that does not have to travel to the Palouse. That is when we find out if the grit is real or just a product of familiar courts. For now, it is worth a nod. Four wins, home crowd, no drama. Go Cougs.
