Jaylen McLaughlin is a pure scorer, and that is exactly what Washington State needed to hear. The Bothell guard became the first commit in the Cougs' class of 2027 on Monday, picking Wazzu over Arkansas State, Toledo, Eastern Washington, and Cal State Fullerton. For a program still finding its footing after the conference realignment shuffle, locking down the No. 2 player in Washington matters. It matters more than the star rating.

McLaughlin averaged nearly 29 points per game last season at Bothell. He dropped 50 in a summer game against Central Valley. He hit ten threes against an Australian team this summer. The kid can fill it up. At 6-foot-3 and 160 pounds, he will need to add strength before he sees the floor in Pullman, but you cannot teach the kind of confidence it takes to walk into a gym and put up 35 points against international competition. This is the kind of guard who makes Beasley Coliseum loud again.

This commitment lands in a weird moment for Cougar hoops. The After 108 years, Cougs-Huskies hoops goes exhibition only news was a gut punch for anyone who grew up circling that date on the calendar. The annual rivalry game is gone for now, and the program is rebuilding its identity outside the Pac-12. McLaughlin represents the other side of that coin: a local kid who chose to stay home when he could have gone elsewhere. He is the fourth American prep recruit the Cougs have landed in the last two years, and that trend matters. Pullman is still a place where you can be the guy.

The obvious question is whether McLaughlin can carry that scoring into the college game. He is ranked the No. 226 player nationally and the No. 39 point guard in the country, per 247 Sports. Those are solid numbers, but they are not blue-chip. What separates him is the production. He is not a project. He is a bucket. If David Riley and his staff can keep developing players like they have with the roster they are building, including the recent addition of Riley's mystery big man is 6-10 and French, welcome Mohamed Sankhe, then McLaughlin has a real path to minutes early in his career. The Cougs need scoring. He provides it.

The takeaway for the rest of us is simple: watch how many Washington kids follow him. McLaughlin is the No. 2 player in the state in his class. If Wazzu can keep the top in-state talent from crossing the mountains, the rebuild gets faster. One guard from Bothell does not fix everything, but it is a start. Go Cougs.
