## Wastewater Testing Offers New Tool for STI Detection Public health agencies are increasingly exploring innovative approaches to disease surveillance, and a groundbreaking new study demonstrates the potential of wastewater testing for sexually transmitted infections. Researchers from the University of Washington and the Washington State Department of Health have successfully demonstrated the ability to detect *Chlamydia trachomatis*, the bacteria responsible for chlamydia, in wastewater samples. This marks a significant advancement, as routine wastewater monitoring for STIs remains uncommon across the United States. The research highlights a promising, cost-effective method for identifying areas with elevated infection rates, allowing for targeted public health interventions. Wastewater analysis provides a broad overview of a community’s health status, offering an anonymous and readily accessible data source.
