Malaysia in mid-May — is the weather really that bad? (Langkawi, Penang, itinerary advice)

I’m planning a trip to Malaysia from May 10 to May 23 and already booked my flights. While putting together my itinerary, I checked the weather and it looks like a lot of rain and thunderstorms pretty much everywhere.

I’m trying to figure out if that’s just normal for this time of year or if it’s unusually bad right now. I’ve been getting mixed answers online, so I’d rather hear from people who’ve actually been there around this period or live there.

Does the rain really affect the experience in places like Langkawi and Penang, or is it more like short bursts you can work around?

My plan for now is Kuala Lumpur → Ipoh → Cameron Highlands → Penang → Langkawi.
